Star Wars – The Battle for Young Minds

On the plane to Buffalo, a strange and somewhat miraculous thing happened. Luke asked Hailey if she would rather watch Star Wars or Cinderella. She said Star Wars. What?!?!?! Have we gone over to the dark side? Has my little pink princess turned into a sci-fi geek? Maybe, but I’m not ready to hang Luke’s vintage Star Wars curtains in her room just yet. Yes, of course Luke has vintage Star Wars curtains, are you kidding me?

Anyhow, the best part of the new Star Wars craze in our house is the make believe play and the conversations that happen. For example, yesterday we were all assigned Star Wars characters

  • Hailey = Queen Amadalla,
  • Sophia = Princess Leah,
  • Daddy = Luke THE Skywalker,
  • Grandpa = Darth Vader,
  • Mommy = Princess Leah’s Grandmother (despite much protest)

We played Star Wars for a while.  Then, later in the day she explained to me that Princess Leah married Luke THE Skywalker.  I told her that this was simply not true.  Princess Leah and Luke THE Skywalker were in fact brother and sister. ” Well, they still get married,” she explained.

“No, brothers and sisters don’t get married,” I replied.

“Yes they do,” she argued.

This went on for a while and I could tell that I needed backup.  So, we called Daddy who explained to her the entire genealogy of what he described as the greatest epic of all time.  Then,  insisted that she watch the third of the first trilogy (I don’t know which one that is).  Regardless, my daughter is being thoroughly geekified, and I’m not even sad about it.
